SCROLL DOWN FOR SPOT CLEANING CHART

Maintaining Your Rugs

Many theories exist today relating to the best method of cleaning your rugs.  After experimenting  with all of the new techniques, we find the best method to use is to extract as much dirt as possible when the rugs are dry, then apply a detergent, extract this from the carpet and intermittently rinse the fiber.

The most important phase of any cleaning is a thorough, daily vacuuming, utilizing a pile lifting machine.  The difference between this machine and a regular vacuum is that the pile lifting machine has two brushes, one which stands the carpet erect, the other pulls out the dirt particles form the very base of the tufts.  Dirt acts as an abrasive;  therefore, it must be removed daily.  We use a Chemspec pile lifter, but there are other products available that are as good.

The next part of the process is a thorough spot cleaning.  We have enclosed a list of spots and the proper means of treating them.  This should be a weekly maintenance item.  A trick we have learned over the years is to prepare a solution of 1/3 part white vinegar, 2/3 parts lukewarm water, and a teaspoonful of Lux liquid.  This formula will reduce acidic spots.

Code of Recommended Stain Removers as listed in Chart

  1. Detergent solution - one teaspoon of a neutral detergent (a brand used for washing lingerie such as liquid Lux, Dreft, or Vel) and one teaspoon of white vinegar in a quart of warm water.
  2. Paint Remover - should not contain any oil.  Lacquer thinner may also be used.
  3. Dry Cleaning Fluid - any common brand used according to manufacturer's instructions.
  4. Rust Remover - (brands such as Eruxticator or Rust GO are recommended)
  5. Acetone - common drugstore brand or nail polish remover WITHOUT LANOLIN or lacquer thinner.
  6. Alcohol - rubbing, denatured, or isopropyl.
  7. Water

*NOTE: If there is no recommended procedure for removing a stain on a specific pile fiber, call a Professional Carpet Cleaner and give him the information pertaining to the staining problem.
